What kind of paint can I use on terra cotta pots?
All paints work for the job, but we prefer to use acrylic craft paint or spray paint, both work well on terracotta pots. Thinning the paint out with a little water helps spread it quickly and easily. This is an optional step, but it really helps spread the paint over the pot when applying the base coat. Most acrylic or enamel paint will adhere well to terracotta, including craft paints. However, I would advise coating the inside of the pots with Bondall Pot and Ornament Sealer before you begin. This will ensure moisture does not enter the terracotta and try to push your paint off the surface. All paints work for the job, but we prefer to use acrylic craft paint or spray paint, both work well on terracotta pots.
How to prime terracotta for painting?
Prime the pot I start off with a terracotta spray sealant for the pot. Once that’s dry, I use acrylic paint brushes (I love my Mont Marte brushes — they’re great quality at a fantastic price), to paint on an even coat of gesso. Choose a clear sealer (brushon or spray) that’s compatible with acrylic paint on ceramics. Apply several thin coats rather than one heavy layer to avoid drips and cloudiness. Allow each coat to dry fully according to the label before adding the next.
How to get acrylic paint to stay on clay?

Acrylic paint on polymer clay, on the other hand, sits atop a smoother, less absorbent base. A light sanding with a fine-grit sandpaper will give the paint the grip it needs. When baking soda is added, it is going to change the composition of the paint and potentially disrupt the binding process. Plus, the paints archival qualities disappear. And finally, the BS and paint mixture will not last. Here’s a more detailed explanation: Interference with Binding: Acrylic paint relies on binders to hold the pigment and create a cohesive film. Baking soda can disrupt this process, potentially leading to a less durable paint layer. What does baking soda do to paint? It creates a fluffier texture and a gorgeous matte finish that you can use to make a DIY terracotta vase, or to paint on glass, walls, wooden boxes, or anything you want to give a colorful, textured finish.
