They have been used to treat diabetes, high blood pressure and have been used as disinfectants. The vinca alkaloids are also important for being cancer fighters. There are four major vinca alkaloids in clinical use: Vinblastine (VBL), vinorelbine (VRL), vincristine (VCR) and vindesine (VDS). Vinca major contains a unique profile of indole alkaloids and flavonoids with physiological impacts directly tied to its traditional uses: Vincamine: Main alkaloid; shown to enhance cerebral blood flow and helps in mild cognitive impairment (MCI).
Does Vinca major spread?
Vinca major (periwinkle) is a spreading perennial vine or ground cover (family Apocynaceae) with dark green stems that contain milky latex. In California it is rapidly spreading in most coastal counties, foothill woodlands, the Central Valley, and even desert areas. Once established, Vinca is drought tolerant. Vinca minor is hardy in zones 4-9, Vinca major 7-11. Maintenance: Vinca can spread into areas it is not wanted so annual trimming of wandering shoots is recommended.Although vincas are known as summer-flowering annuals, they are actually biennials and will flower for you all through autumn into winter. Prune back by 50 per cent at the beginning of spring, liquid fertilise and they will start flowering again at the end of spring.
