What are heirloom seeds?
Kim Schwind The definition of ‘heirloom’ is not always agreed upon — some say an heirloom variety must be at least fifty years old, some say it should be older. But generally speaking, an heirloom seed comes from a plant variety that has been passed on through several generations within a family or community. Though often also organic, heirloom seeds do not have to be. In many cases, heirloom plants do meet the guidelines of the USDA’s National Organic Program because they are typically grown by small-scale gardeners who have adopted organic farming practices.MANY GARDENERS PREFER HEIRLOOM VEGETABLES because they are open-pollinated, which means you can save your own seed to replant from year to year. Seeds saved from heirloom vegetables will produce plants that are true to type, unlike hybrid seeds.Organic seeds guarantee chemical-free growing practices, while heirloom seeds preserve historical plant varieties known for their unique flavors and heritage. Heirloom seeds aren’t inherently more nutritious, but many gardeners prefer them for their superior flavor and adaptability to local growing conditions.
What are high quality seeds?
The seed with physical quality should have uniform size, weight, and colour and should be free from stones, debris, and dust, leafs, twigs, stems, flowers, fruit well without other crop seeds and inert material. It also should be devoid of shriveled, diseased mottled, moulded, discoloured, damaged and empty seeds. Often, there is a local history or cultural significance that comes with them. You can find interesting physical traits and some beneficial resistances from heirloom seeds. Since they are open pollinated, their genetics are more likely to be stable and produce true to seed offspring for seed savers, as well.
What are the disadvantages of heirloom seeds?
Most heirloom seeds are more vulnerable to diseases because commercial seeds are usually bred specifically for disease resistance. Heirloom seeds also have lower yields than hybrids, which can be a disadvantage for farmers and home growers with limited space.
