Light is the most important factor in growing and flowering Vandas. Vanda (sensu-stricto) should not be grown indoors as they are too large, there is not enough light, and the humidity indoors is too low.Unlike some orchids, Vandas are usually in consistent growth cycle and will show blooms, root growth and leaf growth simultaneously. As cultivated plants, vandas grow best in bright, indirect light, ideally a south-facing window or a bright greenhouse. For strap-leaf species and hybrids (see below) 3,000 to 5,000 fc should be sufficient (full, direct sunlight is approximately 10,000 fc by comparison). In the New York City area, a south-facing window is best for all Vanda types. If the plant is spending summer outdoors, terete types with pencil-like leaves need full sun exposure and strap-leaf types and semi-terete types need some protection from direct light.
