Do Cana Lillies come back every year?
Yes, canna lilies come back each year if grown in a warmer climate where they are left in the ground each winter. If you live in a colder climate, however, you can lift out the bulbs, store them properly indoors, and replant them the following spring. If you are planning your garden and wondering how long do canna bulbs take to grow, the timeline is quite predictable once you understand their love for heat. From the moment you tuck the rhizomes into the soil to the appearance of the first flower spike, you can generally expect a journey of about three months. In colder areas north of zone 8, these tropical beauties won’t survive in the ground during winter. Gardeners in these regions can either treat cannas as annuals, discarding them after the season, or dig up and store the bulbs for replanting in spring. The ideal canna bulb planting time is in the spring after the last frost has passed and when soil temperatures have warmed to at least 60°f (15°c). Depending on your location, this usually falls between late april and june.
What to do with cana lillies in winter?
You could leave your Canna tubers in the ground, but some, if not all of them, may ROT over the winter. I’ve found that most of the Cannas growing in a sheltered, south-facing garden in my front yard survive the winter and resprout nicely each spring. So I leave those in the ground and the bulk of them survive. In the fall, dig rhizomes after the leaves have yellowed, died back or have been killed by frost, but before the ground freezes. Leaving your cannas till after a freeze provides the longest possible growing season so the plant can store food for next year’s growth.
