Why did Floret stop selling dahlia tubers?

In an effort to improve the process for our customers and our crew, we have decided to push pause on tuber sales this autumn. I know this will undoubtedly disappoint a lot of people. And I know that the demand for dahlias is tremendous. Dahlia tubers can be started into growth in March or April in pots undercover, and then planted out in the garden in late May and June. Start by half-filling a 2 or 3 litre pot with peat-free multi-purpose compost. Place the tuber in the pot with the central stem upwards and cover with more compost.Starting off dahlia in pots will also encourage them to develop more quickly, so they’re likely to start flowering earlier. Before planting, soak the tubers in a bucket of tepid water for an hour so they can fully rehydrate.Generally, it is normal for dahlia tubers to take 2-4 weeks for green growth to pop out of the soil. Truthfully though, I have had dahlias that have taken up to 8 weeks to show signs of growth. It is a process that has taught me patience more than anything!Yes, dahlias are perennial plants, which means they can grow back every year. However, they are sensitive to freezing temperatures. In colder climates, their tubers need to be dug up and stored over the winter to ensure they return the following year. The main reason dahlia tubers are often in short supply is due to the way they are propagated. Producing new tubers is a labor-intensive process with little room for shortcuts. It’s still done much the same way it was generations ago.
