Where is Carex from?
Carex is an herbaceous perennial belonging to the sedge family (Cyperaceae). Carex can be found throughout much of the world. It is widespread in North America but also commonly occurring in East Asia. The specific species growing in our garden is Carex morrowii, which is native to alpine regions of Japan. Carex is a vast genus of over 2,000 species of grass-like plants in the family Cyperaceae, commonly known as sedges (or seg, in older books).Carex iynx, like most plant names, has a latin root – ‘Carex’ is the Latin word for sedge which comes from the Greek word ‘kairo’ which means “to cut”, this refers to the long narrow leaves of some species have very sharp edges.Carex is a vast genus of almost 2,000 species of grassy plants in the family Cyperaceae, commonly known as sedges (or seg, in older books). Other members of the Cyperaceae family are also called sedges, however those of genus Carex may be called true sedges, and it is the most species-rich genus in the family.Carex foliage color varies from green, to blue, to gold/orange or variegated. Carex plants generally form arching mounds from 10 inches to more than 3 feet tall. Sedges perform great as container plants too but are less tolerant of moisture swings than other grasses.
