Where is the best place to plant saxifrage?
Thanks to their hardy nature, Saxifraga plants can be grown directly outside on arrival, whether that’s into the border or in a pot. They prefer dappled shade and can survive well in a rockery display. Water when needed, when their soil is dry. I propagated my saxifraga plantlets in propagation tubes I made that are ideal for small cuttings like this, and after two weeks, some lovely roots had formed. I planted each (separately) in the smallest pots I could find using a mixture of houseplant compost, cacti and succulent compost and perlite.Another option is to divide the root ball in spring. The saxifrage is dug up, divided into two pieces and the newly obtained plant is replanted in another place.
Are Saxifraga invasive?
Quick facts. Burnet saxifrage is an invasive species. Invader of disturbed areas, such as woodlands and grasslands. High seed production leads to quickly colonizing open environments. I first recorded this plant at Lady’s Island Lake, Co Wexford in 2010 when I also photographed it. Burnet-saxifrage has been used by herbalists in the treatment of asthma and bronchitis. It is reputed to have many more useful properties such as its efficacy in reducing inflammation and easing toothache.
