What kind of paint to use for garden rocks?
We recommend using acrylic paint for both the base coat and your design. For more intricate, hand-painted designs, we suggest that you use paint pens to draw on top of your base coat. With paint pens, you can be a bit more accurate when you are writing on or adding details. No matter what grade acrylic paint you use, a good clear coat can make your piece look expensive! Clear coats protect your paintings from dirt, fireplace soot, grubby little fingers, or crayon markings. Most clear coats dry hard so that the painting can now be cleaned with soft cleaners without damaging the paint.Bob Ross technique uses oil paint on a wet oil based medium to allow the paint to blend on the canvas. Acrylics do not work on a wet oil! You wouldn’t paint emulsion on a wet gloss paint around the house! You can underpaint with acrylic to create a background, allow to completely dry then overpaint with oils.In summary, acrylic paint is not entirely waterproof but does offer some degree of water resistance once it dries. This means that while your artwork won’t immediately wash away with a splash of water, it is still vulnerable to prolonged exposure to moisture.
Will acrylic paint wash off rocks in the rain?
Sealing your rocks is VERY important! Without sealant, many paints will wash off after any contact with moisture. Mod Podge ADHESIVE is great for sealing paper onto rocks, but it is water soluble just like acrylic paints! Sealing Rocks If you decide to seal your rocks painted with acrylic paint, spray sealers are the best option to make them more weather resistant.To place your painted rocks outdoors, we recommend using a spray or brush on gloss varnish. This is a necessary step no matter what you paint your rocks with: posca pens, sharpiea, textas, acrylic paint, etc.For starters, I highly recommend using acrylic paint for rock painting. One of the main purposes of acrylic paint is to paint on a porous surface – rocks count for that. The paint naturally fills in the area and doesn’t just sit on top of the surface.The clear coat protective seal will keep the paint safe from the elements (hopefully no more snow)! You can also use clear nail polish on smaller rocks.Start with a base coat using white acrylic paint that either covers the area you’ll be painting or the entire rock. Having this white base coat underneath acts as a primer for the rock and helps brighten the other paint colors.
What happens if I don’t use primer before painting?

Without a layer of clear coat, your vehicle will have a dull or matte finish to it. Your car’s clear coat can also start to fail and chip if it’s not properly washed and waxed and will usually lead to the clear coat peeling, exposing your base coat of paint.
Do you need primer to spray paint rocks?
