What is a catkin flower?
A catkin or ament is a slim, cylindrical flower cluster (a spike), with inconspicuous or no petals, usually wind-pollinated (anemophilous) but sometimes insect-pollinated (as in Salix). It contains many, usually unisexual flowers, arranged closely along a central stem that is often drooping. Catkins may be erect or pendulous and are often somewhat inconspicuous. Why is it called catkin?
The name “catkin” is though to come from an old Dutch word, katteken, meaning “kitten”. This adorable name probably came from some of the fluffier catkins of the White willow Salix alba, also known as Pussy willows. These shapes are actually long clusters of petal-less (or tiny-petaled) flowers all bundled together. Catkins are a flower cluster, it is cylindrical in shape and is quite slim. It usually lacks petals, in some cases, they might have a very small number of petals on them. Catkin is also known as ament. They are unisexual flowers.Amongst other things that nothing is what it seems at first, at least what seems first for food. Catkin is not only edible, but also, at least some sorts of them, also delicious and untypically aromatic.
What is the purpose of catkins?
What are catkins for? Catkins allow the tree to reproduce. Catkins enable female flowers to be pollinated when pollen from male flowers is blown by the wind. Male catkins drop off after releasing pollen, whereas female catkins collect pollen and then release the seeds. Catkins make a great source of protein and Vitamin A and in spring are full of nutrients from the pollen they contain. They make lovely food for birds and help trees in reproduction so personally I wouldn’t collect too often. It is handy in a survival situation.Birds, like warblers, are attracted to trees with catkins, foraging on insects that feed on both pollen and nectar. Some mammals, such as squirrels, black bear and porcupine also consume catkins; especially during the early spring when other food sources are limited.
