What do British people call their backyards?
In the UK a domestic garden is the land adjoining or belonging to a home. Often, a house has a front garden and a back garden, sometimes the garden surrounds the house. In the USA a yard is the land that adjoins or (often) surrounds a house. On a residential area, a front yard (United States, Canada, Australia) or front garden (United Kingdom, Europe) is the portion of land between the street and the front of the house. If it is covered in grass, it may be referred to as a front lawn.In North America, the term garden refers only to the area that contains plots of vegetables, herbs, flowers, and/or ornamental plants; and the term yard does not refer to the garden, although the flower garden or vegetable garden may be within the yard.
