How long will steel edging last?
Under ideal circumstances our products will last for many decades to hundreds of years, in the worst possible conditions our products will at least last 10 years. Where an edge is to be buried you can improve the lifespan of your edging by painting or applying bitumen before backfilling. Our steel edging systems will last up to 40 years in dry conditions, and are structurally guaranteed for 10 years. You can actually increase the life of your edging by both painting your edging, and by following the correct drainage procedures when installing.According to HomeGuide, concrete curbing and edging lasts an average of 10 to 30 years. This longevity ensures that, once installed, you won’t have to worry about replacing it for decades, which is a significant consideration if you’re looking for low-maintenance landscaping solutions.
How deep should steel edging be?
Most metal edging is going to be deep enough to be installed 4-6 inches into the ground and still have a few inches above ground (with the exception of our Edge Right metal landscape edging that is 8 inches in depth—double that of most common metal edging). I recommend going for 5 inches so that you can bury the edging deep enough to keep out grass from your lawn but still have enough metal aboveground to contain soil, gravel, or mulch in the garden space. Check the gauge of the steel.Edging should sit no higher than 1/2-inch above the ground to avoid tripping and mowing hazards. For typical plastic and rubber edging, dig the trench three to four inches deep and one to two inches wider than the edging.
