Do Suncast sheds need a foundation?
Most Suncast sheds require a concrete or wood foundation for proper assembly and this quick reference has important information you’ll need to know to start off on the right foot. Start With Your Storage Shed’s Square Footage For most sheds smaller than 240 ft2 (12’x20′ or less), concrete isn’t necessary. Anything bigger than 256 ft2 may need a stronger, concrete foundation. We are sometimes asked “Do I need a shed base on slabs? The answer is, you do not always need to install a shed base when using concrete slabs, but it is generally considered a good idea. Concrete slabs are solid, but a base above will give you moisture resistance and protection from damp conditions. The decision to build a shed on a foundation or directly on the ground really shouldn’t be done. A base provides stability, moisture protection, and improved air circulation that sheds really need. This is a key question for anyone planning to build a shed. Getting it right is about more than just looks; it’s about making sure your shed lasts and does its job well. Ideally, your shed should sit at least 4-6 inches off the ground. This height is perfect for keeping the base dry and safe from rot and bugs.
Are Suncast sheds durable?
At Suncast, all of our storage sheds are constructed from resin, a high-density synthetic compound that is lightweight, durable, and economical when compared to materials such as metal and wood—making it perfect for long-term indoor or outdoor use. Resin plastic sheds have limited disadvantages. They need to be anchored to a base and can’t hold as much weight. These sheds also tend to be pricier than metal sheds (but less expensive than wooden sheds). If you are looking for a less expensive and weather-resistant shed, resin is the better option. Resin sheds are weather-resistant against rotting, peeling, rusting, insects, warping, and fading. Resin is also easier to maintain and assemble.Plastic sheds are lightweight and flexible. That makes them easy to move, but also means they need a solid base to stay level. Grass can shift, sink, and soak up water, which can mess with your shed’s floor or even make it tilt over time. So while it’s possible, it’s not perfect. In most cases, yes. A solid shed foundation keeps your shed level, prevents it from shifting over time, and helps protect it from moisture damage.
Do suncast sheds need to be anchored?
At minimum, Suncast recommends a 4” slab with reinforcement bar. Secure the shed to the concrete slab using 3/8” masonry anchors with 1” flat washers. Do not exceed 3/8” anchors. Masonry anchors and washers are available at most local hardware retailers. Anchoring garden sheds All small buildings need to be secured to the ground to avoid them being blown over. This is often achieved by digging out the top layer of ground, laying and compacting hardcore and casting a concrete base, then the shed or shelter can be bolted to the concrete.
Do I need to put anything under a plastic shed?
Plastic sheds need a proper base as it prevents moisture damage, improves airflow and ensures even weight distribution for heavy items. While resin sheds might cost more upfront than some metal options, their durability and minimal maintenance requirements often make them more cost-effective in the long run. They’re also a great choice if you’re looking for something you can assemble yourself without professional help.Cons of Resin / Plastic Sheds Fortunately, resin comes with limited disadvantages. Resin sheds need to be anchored to a base, can bear limited weight on their walls, and are pricier than metal sheds (but less expensive than wooden sheds).Metal sheds are prized for their robustness, excellent structural integrity, and fire resistance. They can endure harsh weather conditions and last for decades with proper maintenance. In contrast, plastic sheds excel in low maintenance, affordability, and pest resistance. On the downside, plastic sheds may not match the look and feel of a classic wooden garden storage shed. Plastic can also become brittle and fade over time when exposed to harsh UV rays. Cheaper plastic sheds may lack the durability of high-quality wood.
