When should I plant Camassia bulbs?
Each spike opens sequentially from bottom to top. Camassia bulbs are best planted between September and November before the ground becomes too hard. Left undisturbed, camassia bulbs will multiply to form naturalised clumps, and can be relied upon to return year after year. Though slender and willowy, camassia flower spikes are made of sturdy stuff and stand up well to wind and rain without the need for staking.
Do Camassia bulbs spread?
Overcrowded Bulbs Camassia will naturalise, growing more and more baby bulbs each year. If they’re left for too long, they might struggle to grow. In the summer once they’ve finished flowering and died back, lift the bulbs and divide them, replanting them elsewhere in the garden. Plant camassia bulbs in autumn, in humus-rich, moisture-retentive soil in full sun or part shade. They’re happy in heavy clay soil and will grow in acid, neutral or alkaline soil. Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering and divide congested clumps in summer.Enjoy your camassia flowers in April, May and into June. Water during prolonged dry periods.
How many Camassia bulbs should you plant together?
Plant camassia bulbs in autumn in a site that gets plenty of sun, though they will tolerate partial shade. Use a bulb planter or a trowel to make a hole for each bulb. Plant the bulbs at least 10-15cm (4-6in) deep (that’s about twice the height of the bulb) and space them at least 10cm (4in) apart. Dig a 6-8 inch deep hole, drop the bulb into it and cover with soil. Regarding the spacing between bulbs, if planting in beds, leave approx 3 inches between each cluster of bulb. If you are planting in containers, you can space them a little closer together.
