Is it worth saving paperwhite bulbs?
Short answer: no — paperwhites cannot realistically be regrown. They are forced extremely hard to bloom indoors, which completely uses up the bulb’s stored energy. Don’t worry, just plant them as soon as you can! As long as they aren’t soft or mouldy, get them in the ground or into pots and they’ll flower this year, just a little later than normal. Bulbs that have been stored for a few months won’t take as long to force. We suggest planting 4-6 weeks before desired bloom time. Planting during the first few weeks of November should give you blooms around Christmas. Place in a brightly lit spot indoors, ideally away from air vents.

Another popular way to grow paperwhites is in shallow bowls filled with gravel or decorative stones, although any container that can hold water can be used. To do this, partially fill the container with gravel/stones (at least 1-2 inches deep), then place the bulbs on top.I buy my bulbs at Lowes and use pea gravel from my yard. How I like to prevent my paperwhites from flopping over. You can also add vodka to the water to stunt their growth so they don’t flop over. I prefer to keep the stems longer because I like to clip the flowers and use them in individual vases.

Can paperwhites grow in just water?
Try growing paperwhites in water rather than soil. It works just as well. Use stones to anchor the bulbs and keep the flowers from tipping over. Washed gravel works well, as do marble chips, polished river stones, tumbled glass or even marbles. Put about an inch of gravel in the dish. Nestle the bulbs in the gravel, pointed side up, close together but not touching. Fill in around the bulbs with more gravel so they stand firmly in place and just the top inch of each bulb shows.Place the bulbs on the gravel or stones. Then place additional gravel or stones around the bulbs, leaving the tips (noses) of the bulbs exposed. Add water to the bowl until it touches the bottom of the bulbs. Maintain the water at this level throughout the forcing period.
