What is a Dutch style garden?
Rectangular flower gardens, often slightly sunk in tiers, and now heavily planted, were seen as Dutch. Any garden with large numbers of tulips is also easily labelled as a Dutch garden. The Tulip is the most famous flower from Holland and often used as the icon of the Netherlands. For more than 400 years the tulip has been connected to Holland.Despite this setback, tulips became a lasting part of Dutch culture and agriculture. The Netherlands is now one of the world’s biggest growers and exporters of the flowers, securing its place as the tulip capital of the world.Just a few years after arriving in Holland, tulips became the most sought-after commodity in the entire Netherlands, after Carolus Clusius wrote what’s considered the first major book about the flower. At the time, tulip bulbs were worth more than gold and were sold for 10 times what a commoner made in a year.Tulips were an exotic item from the East, newly imported at a time when global trade was just beginning to have an impact, of which the Dutch were leaders. In time other plants, such as hyacinths would be all the rage, but in the 1630s it was tulips.
What is the Dutch favorite flower?
The tulip is, without a doubt, an icon of Dutch heritage. This beautiful flower is part of our DNA. When you think of the Netherlands, you think of tulips (along with windmills and canals, of course). When you think of the Netherlands, your first thought is of windmills, canals, tulips, cheese and the Dutch Masters. That makes sense, as these cultural icons are world-famous and really should not be missed when visiting our country.
