Part of Plant Used/Active Medicinal Compounds: At least four groups, the Ccncow, Skagit, Iroquois, and Pomo, recognized Trilliums as poisonous. Several species of Trillium contain chemical compounds called sapogenins that have been used medicinally though the ages as astringents, coagulants, expectorants, and uterine stimulants. This is evidenced in common names given to some trilliums such as birthwort and Indian balm.
How can you identify a trillium flower?
The flowers have 3 petals of various colors, and the bracts are often mottled. There are two major groups of Trilliums: those with the flower held above the bracts on a stem and those without stems or sessile. Flowers can be large and showy or small and drab. Trillium plants can live 20 – 50 years, and can take 7 to 10 years to first bloom. Obviously, it is a sensitive plant. In fact picking the flower too close to the leaves can kill the entire plant.Morphologically, trillium plants produce no true leaves or stems above ground. The “stem” is just an extension of the horizontal rhizome and produces tiny, scale like leaves (cataphylls). The above-ground plant is technically a flowering scape, and the leaf-like structures are bracts subtending the flower.
