Do arum lilies have bulbs?
Two of the eight species of Zantedeschia, Zantedeschia aethiopica and Zantedeschia odorata, have a rhizome, while the remaining six have a bulb (you’ll find these six further in the article). The two species with a rhizome prefer marshy soil and are usually referred to as arum lilies instead of calla lilies. Hardy forms of the plant can be grown outdoors, enjoy moist soil and full sun or partially shaded conditions – these are known as Arum lilies. Tender forms of Zantedeschia prefer being grown in containers or pots and should be brought inside over the winter – these are known as Calla lilies.The plant should be kept in a light, cool place at a temperature of 16 0C by night and 18 0C during the day. The plants do not tolerate severe frost. Arum lily prefers a well-composted soil containing generous amounts of well-decomposed plant matter.Arum lily spreads vegetatively by regeneration from tuber fragments and by seeds, in the past the plant was planted extensively for both landscaping purposes and as an ornamental cut flower. Seed and rhizomes can be spread by water along with landscaping activities.
What to do with arum lilies in winter?
After your lilies have flowered, you need to…. Leave the bulbs in the ground or in your pots as they like a cold dormant phase throughout the winter (they can tolerate -20c). Ensure they have plenty of drainage so they don’t get waterlogged as this will cause the bulbs to rot. If you want the lily to return next year, leave at least 1/3 of the stem behind to replenish the bulb. After cutting, remove any leaves that will fall below the water line to prevent bacterial growth. Then, place the lilies into a clean plastic bucket filled with fresh water.Once your lilies have finished flowering, you can stop watering them and then cut just the flower heads off leaving plenty of stem on. Allow the stem and foliage to die back naturally until it has turned yellow and hollow. This is usually towards the Autumn time.From a large Lily bulb, about 25 scales come , so a Lily grower can make about 50 new bulbs from each bulb. After the 12 weeks of warmth, the Lily grower places the scales in the cold store for a few months to then plant them in the spring, around the end of April, beginning of May.
When to plant arum lilies?
Arum are hardy to around -20C and can be planted straight outside in the spring. They don’t require any frost protection over winter. Plant the tubers directly into a cleared space in a border or pot them up to grow on outdoors for a few months first. White arums will go dormant in both summer- and winter-rainfall regions when it becomes the dry season, but will remain evergreen if growing in moist or boggy soil and if watered regularly. The flowering season is from August to January, sometimes with sporadic flowering in other months.
How to keep arum lilies flowering?
If you are keeping arum in the greenhouse, they require a loam based potting compost in full light. Water freely and feed in the growing season. Z. They are therefore best grown in pots and planted out in summer borders before being lifted and re-potted in the greenhouse for the winter. Both species of arum which we offer are rhizomatous perennials. Z. Z.
Can I plant lilies in October?
Lilies can be planted in the autumn as well as in the spring. In the fall you can plant them in October to December and in the spring between the end of April and the end of June. We recommend planting the lily bulbs as soon as possible after receipt. Planting: Lily bulbs can be planted in fall or early spring. If planting in the fall it is important to do so at least four weeks prior to your last frost date in order that they can put down strong roots before the ground freezes. Plant in early spring when the ground is workable but not muddy.They should be planted after the ground has chilled down to about 55°F, after about two weeks of sweater weather when night time temperatures have hovered in the 40’s. As we mentioned above, this is the best time to plant Lily bulbs. Flower bulbs do everything in response to temperature and sunlight.
