Is the fruit of Arbutus unedo edible?
Sadly, while edible, the fruit of arbutus tree isn’t as tasty as real strawberries and is best left for the birds. Both the flowers and fruit are found on the tree at the same time, making it a particularly lovely specimen, especially in small gardens. The fruit is edible, but on the bland side. It’s best in jams, preserves, jellies vs. It’s an Arbutus Unedo. The customers would take one bite and then discard the remainder; the plant thus lived up to its Latin name of Arbutus unedo, for unedo means eat once. It is not that the fruits are poisonous, they are just very insipid (and apparently, if consumed in large quantities, slightly narcotic).
What problems do Arbutus trees have?
Arbutus are evergreen trees or shrubs, some of which also produce attractive red fruits. They can sometimes be affected by fungal leaf spot diseases, which may spoil their appearance and, in severe cases, lead to leaf loss and twig dieback. The Arbutus (also known as “Pacific madrone”) is a distinct evergreen deciduous species on Canada’s west coast distributed from Mexico to the Central Coast and associated islands in BC. Typically the ecological community that forms around this species is found less than 10 kilometres from coastlines.
